POLYLACTIC ACIDS THE BASICS

Polylactic acid (PLA) or also known as polylactide is a sustainable substitute to other petrol-based polymers seeing that it is produced from the fermentation of renewable resources such as those from agricultural wastes.


With the possibility of it being able to biodegrade under certain environmental conditions, the prospect of the rapid accumulation of chemically-synthesized plastic waste can be finally solved. And PLA is the answer to all that and more!


Since PLA-based bioplastics have the capabilities of being used to make a variety of everyday products ranging from plastic bags and disposable containers to food packaging and throwaway tableware, the capacity to utilize PLA is essentially infinite.


It is a relatively cost-effective and more importantly an environmentally friendly method of both running a business and leading an active lifestyle, whereby both can have a lesser carbon footprint on our planet.


Process Production of PLA

Agricultural waste which rich in starch was transformed into simple form of sugar. Further, upon fermentation, specific microorganism was used to convert sugar (glucose) into lactic acid. Later, lactic acid produced will be recovered and purified by using advance separation equipment.

Polylactic acid (PLA) is then produced from polymerization of lactic acid via distillation or opening ring polymerization process. Finally PLA is extruded to become resin, and ready as a stock material for production of various type of bioplastic products.
